I know visas can be a bit stressful, so I made this walkthrough from when I was applying for my own India Visa!
Things You’ll Need For Your Tourist Visa India for US Citizens
- Hotel name at least one. Name and address
- India Reference You’ll need a name and phone number
- Picture with the following specifications (JPG format)
- Passport with the following specifications (PDF format)
Tourist Visa India for US Citizens Getting Started
- Luckily, the tourist visa for India can be done online here!
This is the screen you should see. You can see at the bottom left where it says, “Apply here for a visa” or if you’ve already started one, the “Complete partially filled application.”
2. A new application will open up some standard questions to get started.
- Nationality is “United States of America” if you’re from the US
- Passport type is “Ordinary Passport” unless you have a different kind
- Port of Arrival is how you’re entering. Delhi airport is probably most common
- Date of Birth needs day first, or use the calendar to make sure it’s correct
- Visa Service depends on your situation, but most are going to be etourist, and I selected for 30 days unless you’re planning on more travel in India.
Applicant Details Section of the Tourist Visa India for US Citizens
Most of these should be pretty standard, but just in case, here is some clarity.
- Surname is last name.
- Given Names is First and Middle
- Citizenship/National ID No put NA if you don’t have one. Passport is later
- Visible Identification Marks is an area to describe birthmarks, tattoos, or other unique features.
- Educational Qualification is your education level.
- Below Matriculation is still in school
- Graduate is College degree
- Illiterate is can’t read
- NA being a minor is for under 18
- Post Graduate is grad school degree
- Professional I believe is trade school
- Nationality by birth or naturalization is asking if you are a US citizen because you were born in the US or because you received it via paperwork.
Next up is Passport info. Should all be found on your passport.
This is followed by more personal information.
For occupation, if you don’t see yours on the list, you can select whatever is closest, or “others.”
Visa Details for the Tourist Visa India for US Citizens
Whether you’re on a tour or going solo, write the cities you’re planning on visiting. I went with G Adventures, so I used my itinerary to know which cities I was going to.
I clicked that I booked things through a tour operator, and more questions came up. I went with G Adventures, so I put that and their address of 19 Charlotte St, Toronto, Canada.
Most of these questions disappear if you hit no
Above this was countries you’d been to in last 10 years (Up to 20). SAARC countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri-Lanka.
Reference Name should be given to you by your tour company or if you arranged your own trip, a local contact.
Reference Name in US is someone in the US.
Legal Info Part of the Tourist Visa India for US Citizens
These all default to yes, so make sure you read them all, so they’re all accurate.
Document Upload for the Tourist Visa India for US Citizens
See the specifications for your pic and passport at the top of the page. But you’ll upload both those in this area.
For the picture, I took a picture of me with my phone, and uploaded it to Canva to remove background.
For the passport, I took a picture and then uploaded it to Canva, and downloaded as PDF.
Final Steps for India Visa for US Citizens
And for payment, mine was $25, and I chose Paypal because I don’t know what the others are 😀
My application was approved and printed within 24 hours!
